Acknowledgements

These documents have mentioned some people that have had a positive influence on my life and for whom I have a great respect for the way they have worked and who have become and remained friends.

• Dr Clive M Rice: My supervisor for my PhD work, who encouraged and guided me through my PhD years and always gave (and I am sure still gives) full credit where credit is due.
• Elizabeth Jones: Who was my immediate boss when I worked with Consolidated Gold Fields and remains one of best people I have ever worked for. Liz allowed me to develop my own ideas and work on them when time allowed. I have appreciated this throughout my working life. She is someone who is not scared to go her own way.
• Richard Braithwaite: A great driller, a great surveyor, a practical and resourceful man of honesty and integrity from whom I learned most of what I know about Drilling (even if I have never managed to teach him about programming).
